finally a fresh collections of quotes for my blog…and more…

so…you say it’s been awhile since i’ve blogged??  or, more than likely chances are you haven’t been to my blog/site in sometime…well, i’ve been busy, and always the mind is moving, turning and creating.  i haven’t taken a purposeful hiatus…life has just been keeping me busy with family and the art teaching day job, has been a trying year to say the least…i am proud to say, though with the summer just about behind us we (family) are stronger from the journeys of the year and going strong…and, with a new art teaching year ahead, am slowly getting geared up to go on that too…

now about my fascination with artists quotes and words in general:  i’ve been fascinated with artist sayings, quotes for as long as i know. as i read stories, passages from books, magazines, etc. when some phrase strikes me, i’m writing them in my sketchbook and save for later as part of my titling process for new paintings (just another random of my word collections)…i collect them from various arenas, type/copy/paste into my notes app on my iphone and save for later…well, later has finally come and i am happy to share with you all. what’s interesting this time around, is that they are not just from artists (most are), and not just about art, but most do apply to the arts, creating in particular.  they will be listed here and on the right of my blog page (newest from top down)…here, i’ll add some thoughts after/about the ones that particularly stand out most…hope you enjoy.

Artists never thrive in colonies. Ants do. What budding artists need is the privilege of wrestling with his problems in solitude…and now and then a piece of red meat.” ~Henry Miller the great furniture designer, a man after my own heart (a lover of red meat) and plenty of wrestling going on in the studio these days…

“Do not let praise or criticism get to you. It’s a weakness to get caught up in either one.”John Wooden this is so true and very real in the art world (and i can get caught up in both at times).

Artist Robert Motherwell once said this about abstract art: “One might truthfully say that abstract art is stripped bare of other things in order to intensify it, its rhythms, spatial intervals, and color structure. Abstraction is a process of emphasis . . . ” enough said.

“It’s not where you take things from. It’s where you take them to.” – Jean-Luc Godard a good quote to keep in the mind.

“When I work, I work very fast, but preparing to work can take any length of time.” Cy Twombly i don’t know if this is true with a lot of artists, but this is definitely true with me…but just getting to that point can be an eternity sometimes…but when i do, it’s at a pretty feverish pace.

“An artist’s working life is marked by intensive application and intense discipline.” John F. Kennedy who would of thought that the great JFK would have an appreciation of artists (i wish i knew where this one was from).

“Every good painter paints what he is.”-jackson pollock still my favorite artist…true to himself to a fault.

“It is not your paintings I like, it is your painting.”-Albert Camus love the complex simplicity here.

“The painter has the Universe in his mind and hands.” ~Leonardo da Vinci

“Paintings have a life of their own that derives from the painter’s soul.” -Vincent Van Gogh if not, what are they then?  are they art??

“Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.”  -Thomas Merton so very true.

“ART IS NOT WHAT YOU SEE, BUT WHAT YOU MAKE OTHERS SEE.” – Georgia O’Keeffe

“… what is more important is a feeling of strength in reserve – tension beneath calm.” -Richard Diebenkorn this is something i think i’ve always been trying to achieve…more for the viewer to dig into and see the tension in my work.

“I paint objects as I think them, not as I see them.”  ~Pablo Picasso something as artists all of us should do…
